step 1. Make sure derailleur is adjusted correctly. You shouldn't consistently be dropping the chain on the road. Rough, muddy situations, sure. Or what Kelli said: worn parts.

step 2. If you want one for your cross bike, I am your man. I have a similar one that came on my bike, but it won't fit the Guru. I took it off because on two occasions it did not stop the chain from coming off and was a real PITA to get back on.

Where these would really pay off is as a preventative measure for your chain tearing through your uber light and delicate carbon fibre bottom bracket shell in the off chance that you do derail.

I'm totally sending that link to a friend. Every time we ride he drops his chain a couple of times. The real reason is because his chain is all stretched out and he needs a new one.
